Diabetes education helps people build the knowledge, practical skills and confidence needed to manage diabetes in everyday life. At HealthPlus Diabetes & Endocrinology Center in Abu Dhabi, diabetes educators support people with type 1, type 2 and diabetes in pregnancy, working alongside the wider diabetes care team. Education can include glucose monitoring, medicines, insulin, nutrition, diabetes technology, problem-solving and complication prevention.
Diabetes education is useful at diagnosis and throughout life with diabetes, not only when symptoms occur. You may benefit from support if you:
Are newly diagnosed or unsure how to manage diabetes day to day
Have frequent high or low glucose readings
Find glucose targets difficult to achieve
Are starting insulin, continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) or an insulin pump
Need help with food, carbohydrate counting or physical activity
Are preparing for pregnancy or managing diabetes during pregnancy
Want to understand how to reduce the risk of diabetes complications
Are moving through a change in treatment, school, work, travel or daily routine
Current diabetes guidelines recommend diabetes self-management education and support throughout the diabetes journey, rather than only when problems develop.
Diabetes is a complex long-term condition that requires many decisions outside the clinic. Glucose levels can be affected by food, activity, medicines, illness, stress, sleep and changes in routine. Treatment can become more demanding when insulin, CGM or pump technology is introduced.
Education helps identify practical barriers and turns a medical treatment plan into manageable daily actions. Current diabetes standards recommend diabetes self-management education and support at diagnosis, when treatment goals are not being met, when complicating factors develop and during important transitions in life or care.
A diabetes educator does not replace your diabetologist or endocrinologist. The educator works with you and the clinical team to understand your treatment plan, glucose patterns, medicines or insulin, monitoring method, nutrition, lifestyle and areas where you need more confidence.
At HealthPlus, support can include reviewing glucose meter, CGM or pump information; teaching diabetes technology; carbohydrate-counting guidance; insulin-related education; and helping patients develop realistic self-management goals. Education is personalised according to diabetes type, treatment, age, lifestyle and individual needs.
HealthPlus diabetes education may include:
Understanding type 1, type 2, prediabetes and diabetes in pregnancy
Blood glucose monitoring and interpreting glucose patterns
CGM education and device support
Insulin injection education and day-to-day insulin management
Insulin pump training, specialist workshops and pump-related support
Carbohydrate counting and practical nutrition education
Recognising and responding to hypoglycaemia and hyperglycaemia
Education for children, adolescents and families, including special programmes and workshops
Screening awareness, lifestyle guidance and self-care to reduce complication risk
HealthPlus currently states that its insulin pump programme includes 24-hour phone assistance for pump-related complications. The wider center also provides specialist care for foot, kidney, nerve and retinal complications. Diabetes education supports prevention and timely referral; diagnosis and treatment of these complications remain with the appropriate clinical specialist.
You can see a diabetes educator after diagnosis, when medicines or insulin change, when starting CGM or pump therapy, or whenever diabetes feels difficult to manage. Education is also valuable for recurrent low or high glucose, carbohydrate-counting support, pregnancy planning, or improving confidence with daily self-care.
You do not need to wait until diabetes is poorly controlled to benefit from education.
HealthPlus provides diabetes education within its Diabetes & Endocrinology Center, allowing educators to work alongside diabetes and endocrinology specialists, dietitians and other services involved in diabetes care.
HealthPlus lists Mai Yaghi, Diabetes Educator, whose profile includes diabetes self-management, CGM and insulin-pump education, insulin adjustment, diabetes in pregnancy and carbohydrate counting. Nadine Hilal, Dietician and Diabetes Educator, has postgraduate training in diabetes care and education and insulin-pump training.
